Functions of the Larimer County Weed Management Program
The Larimer County Weed Management Program is dedicated to reducing the presence of invasive weeds and mitigating their harmful effects on local ecosystems, agricultural areas, and public spaces throughout the county.
Key Functions:
- Provide support to property owners dealing with noxious weeds by offering plant identification services, weed control advice, and assistance in creating vegetation management strategies.
- Enhance community knowledge and prevention of noxious weeds through educational programs, distribution of informational materials, and on-site assessments.
- Oversee the control of noxious weeds on county-owned lands and along roadways.
- Implement enforcement of the Colorado Noxious Weed Act for properties that do not comply with regulations.
Invasive Weeds Have a Severe Negative Impact on the Environment of Northern Colorado
What Are “Noxious Weeds”?
A “noxious weed” is specifically defined under the Colorado Noxious Weed Act as an exotic and invasive plant. “Exotic” refers to non-native species, often originating from regions in Europe and Asia with climates similar to the Rocky Mountains, that are foreign to the local ecosystem.
- The Colorado Noxious Weed Act classifies threatening weed species into three categories:
- List A species, which are top priority for eradication as they are not well established but pose a significant threat to Colorado.
- List B species, which are prevalent enough that eradication may not be feasible, but are still targeted for control measures depending on their local prevalence and impact.
- List C species, which are widespread and well established.
The Larimer County Noxious Weed Management Plan mandates the eradication of all List A species and, depending on their abundance, eradication or control of List B species.
Colorado actually has a noxious weed awareness week due to the negative impact of noxious weeds on native plants, wildlife, pollinators, and agriculture.
